We're back from Cameroon where we successfully put on a Festival in Limbe on the Atlantic coast. It really was "The Town of Friendship" as it says as you enter.
Videos of the festival are up on the Baka Beyond YouTube Channel

We are ready now to do some 5-piece Baka Beyond gigs. Check out the gigs page.

You can read a review from last years Quintet show in Stroud HERE
Listen to some of the tracks from that gig HERE

We will be performing as the full 7-piece lineup in California, USA and will be performing another "EXTRAVAGANZA" concert (Like last year's Komedia gig) at the Frome Festival in July.

We were to be performing as the full band at the Black Horse Festival in Kent in May, but we've just heard that they haven't been given a licence! What's happening to this country?

After the success of last year's Baka Camp we will be doing 2 this summer. More details HERE

Big Green Gathering

Unfortunately the Big Green Gathering was served with a court injunction and won't be happening this year, so we won't be playing. Great shame as its a beautiful, peaceful festival. I thought the British authorities had grown out of this behaviour - obviously not!

Greetings and Happy New Year!

Beyond the Forest

As I write Martin and I are in Yaounde on our way back to the forest just putting the final touches to the text of the new album, "Baka Beyond the Forest". The album is inspired by the singing of the Baka women, haunting yodelling that enchants animals and has kept us returning to the forest for seventeen years. We must be under its spell too!

Martin worked hard on the album between tours last year and it has an intensity and freshness to my ears. He managed to unlock some of the secrets of the dense interweaving of the Baka voices by multitracking the singing. These had been beautiful, but impenetrable before. He then replaced some of the vocal lines with instruments and a whole new sound has emerged. The original voices and percussion are still live and present, yet it is surprisingly similar to Reggae.

On our last trip I spent night after night under the stars with the fireflies and five Baka women. We sang and recorded through the nights until dawn or exhaustion. We were communicating with a forest soaked in the sound of insects and animals. From these recordings a sister album showing the beauty of the yelli alone, "Baka in the Forest" will be out soon.

After so much time with these Baka friends, immersing myself in their songs since 1992, they feel I'm ready to start teaching the techniques beyond the forest. If you'd like to set up or participate in a workshop leave a message for me HERE

Touring UK in May '09

We hope to be near you and share this new music with you. Due to Denise having other commitments in May we are pleased to invite Molara to join us on this tour. She was the original and brilliant singer of Zion Train. she is a natural with yelli and a great presence on stage. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there. Dates will be posted on our return from Cameroon in February.
